1) De-sexing. There is a myth that a bitch needs to have a litter of puppies before she is de-sexed. This is not true. However if a bitch is to be de-sexed (spayed) it should not be done until after the bitch is one year old and preferably not until two years old.The long bones in a dog need those sex hormones to grow properly. Also bitches spayed at too young an age tend to be prone to developing incontinence in later years. Not de-sexing a bitch can lead to infection of the uterus called Pyometra which can be fatal. Males can be castrated to help prevent testicular cancer and to help stop them roaming. Neutering can also calm down an overly aggressive male dog. Early Neutering health problems.
2) Worming. Dogs need to be de-wormed to get rid of intestinal worms and to prevent Heartworm. For Heartworm prevention you can use "Heartguard Chewables" (monthly), or you can get the vet to give them a yearly injection.
One of the cheapest places to buy "Heartguard Chewables" is Budget Pet Products. They sell a range of pet products at cheaper than store or vet prices.
A good all-wormer for intestinal worms is"Drontal All-Wormer;" however a natural wormer that you can try is Fossil Shell Flour. In Australia you can purchase it from Avian Vitality. (nb. care needs to be taken not to breathe in this flour when using it.)

3) Dogs and Cats Dogs and cats can sometimes get along better than dogs with other dogs. There is no need for a fight for dominance (the cat always assumes it's the boss) as there is with two dogs, and a lonely dog may bond with a cat rather than have a rival dog foisted on it. Having said this however a puppy brought up with any animal is likely to accept it as a friend as it grows up. Two dogs of different breeds may get on better than two of the same breed and a male & female combo may be better than two males or two females. If you can't afford two dogs, try a puppy and kitten combo and they will keep each other company when you are not around.
4) Winter can be for pets a time of relief from the heat of summer but animals can feel the cold too. If you don't want your dog inside then please give it an insulated kennel to sleep in with warm bedding inside. n.b.Oats added to food will warm up the blood.
|
5) Shelter Animals If it's cold outside and you are snuggled up warmly in bed spare a thought for the stray and unwanted dogs shivering and alone in their pens in shelters. Adopting or fostering a dog (or cat) from a shelter is a rewarding thing to do. A shelter dog or cat can make a good companion for your G.S.D or W.S.S. Be sure to arrange dogs to meet on neutral territory and always treat them the same without favouring one above the other. Separate them when feeding and when preparing their meals as dogs can be very possessive of their food. Don't expect all to go smoothly when introducing another being into your dog's family, whether a baby or another animal; jealous animals can be problematic. Things usually resolve themselves in time though and with a lot of patience on your part.
6) Separation anxiety. Your German Shepherd Dog, or White Swiss Shepherd will form such a close bond with you that they will want to be with you at all times, loving you and protecting you.
When you are absent from them they can suffer anxiety attacks which may, to reduce their stress levels, cause them to damage your house or garden. It is not their fault.
Dogs are pack animals and you are their pack leader and they look to you for instructions. When you aren't there they feel lost. Barking or howling can be their way of calling to you; this is how wolves located each other. Try leaving on a radio, and sneaking out like a thief, closing the door silently behind you when you go out. Sometimes it even works. Try never to leave your dogs alone for any length of time. People who own a dog and are at work all day need to think about doggy day-care where their dog can go and play with other dogs during the day. Dogs do not do well left alone in a house or a back yard. Giving a dog a Kong filled with treats may help to divert a bored and lonely dog. nb. Never leave a dog unsupervised with a bone, bones can become stuck in a dog's mouth causing a lot of distress and often can cause lacerations.

7) Collars and leads. There is a correct way and an incorrect way to put on choke collars. To see how to do it properly go to
Pet Education. However, it is best not to use a metal choke collar as they have been known to damage a dog's windpipe and even to break a dog's neck! You can buy a fabric choke collar, but a head collar is probably the best way to go if you have a dog that pulls. |
8) Puppies are dear little things and easy to care for if you know what you are doing. They are not cheap to keep with three C3 injections required; de-worming; feeding puppy food 3-4 times a day etc. but the care and expense you put into your pup will show in your adult dog. The yearly cost for a large adult dog can be about $1,000. Don't get a puppy if you can't afford an adult dog. Some helpful websites on puppy care are:

9) Rawhide bones from China. Beware of rawhide (or any dog treats) from China. They have killed dogs! They can contain arsenic! Here is what a vet in America says:
"Here's the thing, dogs have been dying for the past 6 years after eating some products from China. The FDA and Veterinarians do not know for sure why this is occurring or what the agent is that is causing the deaths. The recommendation from the veterinary community is to AVOID FEEDING TREATS MADE IN CHINA! Personally I would throw them all away and only purchase products that don't come from China. I am a vet and I have looked into this recently. This is the latest information that we have on the subject."

10) Tennis Balls: There have been questions about tennis balls and dogs teeth, as the coating on the balls was thought to be harmful for teeth. There is also the question of balls getting stuck in the dogs throat. Here are some articles from the internet:
1/ The problem is that dogs have strong jaws capable of compressing a tennis ball. If that compressed ball pops open in the back of the throat, it can cut off a dog's air supply. Most notably, one of Oprah Winfrey’s beloved dogs was a tennis ball victim, but there have been many others. The chewed bits of a tennis ball also aren't something you want inside your dog. You don't have to throw away all your tennis balls, but you do need to use them in a way that reduces the risk of choking. Tennis balls should always be put out of reach after a game of fetch, and no dog should ever be allowed to use them as a chew toy. In supervised play, insist that your dog fetch, return and immediately release the ball — no games of keep away while the dog works the ball in her mouth. And have only one ball in play at a time, to minimize the risk of having your dog pick up more than one and get the furthermost ball lodged back in her throat. Keep the game of fetch fast and lively to keep the focus on the chase and the next throw.
2/ Question: Is it safe for my dog to chew tennis balls?Answer: NO, and that’s why we recommend racquetball balls and solid rubber balls instead. The nylon fuzz on tennis balls is abrasive and wears down teeth. Worse, as the balls roll along the ground, the fuzz picks up grit, which increases the abrasion. Picture your dog chewing a wad of sandpaper, and you’ll understand how tennis balls wear down the enamel on our teeth.
3/ There was a veterinarian from the University of Wisconsin Veterinary school on the radio yesterday with a warning about tennis balls, especially those made for dogs. It seems they have a high lead content, and should not be used. She recommended Lead free tennis balls.
4/ One of my students that is a small animal vet is against tennis balls in general; she has has to remove the remnants all too often from inside dogs!

19) Breeding Before undertaking to breed from your bitch ask yourself these questions
1) Am I doing this for the betterment of the breed or just to make a quick buck?
2) Can I get the services of a stud dog who is a genuine White Swiss Shepherd or if applicable a genuine white German Shepherd?
3) Have I the time to devote to looking after a litter of puppies?-they just can't be left for the bitch to care for on her own.
4) Have I a puppy-safe garden?
5) Will puppy noise affect the neighbours?
6) Have I got pre-orders for the puppies?- it is not a good idea to breed dogs, then hope you can sell all the puppies.
7) Do I know enough about breeding and the genetic health of my bitch to be able to do this successfully?
Breeding is not for the faint-hearted or those who don't know what they are doing. You can end up with a vet bill for over $1,000 if your bitch needs a C-section, and puppies need milk and puppy food as they are weaned. They also need worming and their C3 shots, so all in all puppies are not cheap to produce. Breeding is best left to the experienced breeder.

25) Smoking and your dog:
Article from Dogington Post B. Arnold - Jan 20, 2014
'Second-hand smoke, also known as Environmental Tobacco Smoke or ETS basically comes from anything that is smoked such as cigars, cigarettes, and pipes. ETS is a carcinogen that causes cancer not just in humans but animals as well. Aside from cancer, second-hand smoke is also associated with respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, asthma, chronic lung infections, and eye problems. ETS has been thoroughly studied where humans are concerned, but not as much research has been done for companion animals. Studies show that tobacco smoke comprises up to 20 different carcinogens that can be readily inhaled by non-smokers. ETS contains the smoke that is released by a burning cigarette, pipe, or cigar, as well as those that are exhaled by the smoker themselves. There are more than 4,000 chemicals found in second-hand smoke including carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, arsenic, benzene, chromium, nickel, and vinyl chloride. Related Findings In dogs, second-hand smoke has been found to be greatly associated with nasal sinus cancer and also linked with lung cancer. A study conducted at the State of Colorado reveals that there is a higher incidence of nasal cavity tumors in dogs that were exposed to ETS as compared to dogs that live in households with non-smoking members. This conclusion was particularly found amongst breeds with long noses such as Collies. Experts indicate that long-nosed breeds are more at risk because their nasal passages consist of greater surface area on which the carcinogens can be deposited before it reaches the lungs. Also, they pointed out that because their nasal passages have more cells, there is a greater chance that some of these cells get mutated by carcinogens into cancer cells.
Puppies can die from eating one cigarette butt and adult dogs can be poisoned.
One study at Colorado State University showed that the increased incidence of nasal cancers was specifically found among the long nosed breed of dogs, whereas shorter or medium nosed dogs showed higher rates for lung cancer. Nicotine poisoning is also a real concern. It can happen anytime pets eat tobacco or products containing nicotine. Eating a pack of cigarettes or whole cigars may not seem logical, but dogs taste first and suffer consequences later. It can also be an exploring dog’s nose that leads him to eat cigarette butts or chewing tobacco. Nicotine gum or patches can attract dogs and cats equally due to flavor additives.
A single cigarette contains between nine and 30 milligrams of nicotine, and the butt of a used cigarette still has about 25% of the original amount of nicotine that the entire cigarette had before burning. Just as an example, a 40 pound dog can get sick from eating just one cigarette, but it may take 10 cigarettes to be fatal. Cigars have higher nicotine so it wouldn't take as many to show signs.

34) Mixed Breeding
Owners of white German Shepherds please do the right thing and if you are changing over to breeding White Swiss Shepherds get your German Shepherds de-sexed. There is too much confusion already with some white G.S.D. breeders labeling their dogs and puppies as White Swiss Shepherds. A white G.S.D. bred with a White Swiss Shepherd is technically a cross-breed and should be sold as such. Pup buyers should only buy from a reputable breeder and you can contact this club for details of such. |

Beware of latex and other toys from China, for dogs or children. They can contain chemicals that are toxic when sucked on. Balls marketed for dogs can also contain toxins. For more info go to: Poisoned Pets WATOXICS The Bark Dogington Post |
36) Dogs and allergies
As we enter spring and begin to think about hay-fever be aware that your dog can have allergies too, and not just to grass or pollen. If your dog is constantly scratching and fleas aren't the cause it could be a food allergy; or an environmental allergy; or an allergy to the cat or dog or other pet it lives with. See the below webs for more info.

37) Dogs love walks
You may think that if you have a large back yard that your dog will be happy and not need to go for walks. Dogs, like humans, need stimuli, and a daily walk or two will help to overcome the boredom of confinement to a house and backyard. Remember that when dogs were wolves they roamed over a large territory and although dogs have adapted to live with humans they still need a 'territory' to walk in. Remember to let your dogs sniff scents that are interesting to them and not hurry them on when they stop to sniff something (unless that something is dead or smelly). Dogs get their understanding of their surroundings by smell rather that sight. We humans have 5million scent detecting cells in our nose, a G.S.D/W.S.S has 225 million! So let your dog sniff as it walks.

42) Children and Dogs On the whole your white G.S.D/W.S.S will get on well with your children as they are good tempered dogs. However the rule of thumb is never leave your child unsupervised around any dog. Children can accidentaly hurt a puppy or dog by rough play (or by dropping a pup), so if you don't want to compromise your child or your dog then always supervise their interaction and teach children how to handle a puppy or a dog gently and never to put their faces up close to dog. 43) Deaf Dogs There used to be (and maybe still are) rumours that white German Shepherds are deaf. We know that isn't true; selective hearing definitely, but not deafness due to colour. If you buy or adopt any deaf dog the payoff may be that the dog will be a non-barker as it won't hear things to bark at. Good for keeping sweet with the neighbours. Deaf dogs can be trained with hand signals. For info go to:

44) Bee stings. Spring blossoms attract bees and a bee sting on the tongue can kill a dog. If this happens to your dog and its tongue swells up, give the dog a crushed 2mg.Polaramine anti-histamine tablet under its tongue (or administer regular Benedryl liquid) and apply ice. Get the dog to a vet as quickly as possible.

47) The Dog Poem. When God made sea and earth and sky, the flowers and the trees, He then made all the animals, and all the birds and bees.
And when His work was finished, not one was quite the same; He said 'I'll walk this earth of mine, and give each one a name.
And so he traveled land and sea, and everywhere He went, a little creature followed Him, until its strength was spent.
When all were named upon the earth, and in the sky and sea, the little creature said 'Dear Lord, there's not one left for me?'
The Father smiled and softly said, 'I've left you to the end, I've turned my own Name back to front, and called you DOG, my friend.' Author unknown.

48) Rules for Puppies
The garbage collector is NOT stealing our stuff. I do not need to suddenly stand straight up when I'm lying under the coffee table. I must shake the rainwater out of my fur BEFORE entering the house. I will not eat the cats' food, before or after they eat it. I will stop trying to find the few remaining pieces of clean carpet in the house when I am about to throw up. I will not roll on dead birds, fish, rodents, etc. 'Kitty box crunchies' are not food. And should I forget, I will not lick my human's face after eating 'Kitty box crunchies'. The diaper pail is not a cookie jar. I will not wake Mommy up by sticking my cold, wet nose against her bottom end. I will not chew my human's toothbrush and not tell them. I will not chew crayons or pens, especially not the red ones, or my people will think I am haemorrhaging. When in the car, I will not insist on having the window rolled down when it's raining outside. We do not have a doorbell. I will not bark each time I hear one on TV. I will not steal my Mom's underwear and dance all over the back yard with it. The sofa is not a face towel. Neither are Mom & Dad's laps. My head does not belong in the refrigerator. I will not bite the officer's hand when he reaches in for Mom's driver's license and car registration. |

I. Mealtime
The day is divided into two important sections: the all-important mealtime, and everything else.
I. Mealtime
- Just because there does not seem to be anything visible around to eat certainly does not mean there is nothing around to eat. The act of staring at the underside of a table or chair on which someone else is eating sets in motion a chain of events that eventually results in food.
- It goes without saying that you should carefully check the lower third of any space for edibles. Mouth-sized things which cannot be identified by sight or smell are considered gum.
- When you actually receive a meal, submerge your head into it as you would a shower. Never, never look up again until a minimum of at least fifteen minutes after the obvious food is gone. This is important. Just because your dish is empty does not mean that it is time to stop eating.
- Remember that all food is potentially yours up until the time that it is actually swallowed by another. The lengthy path a piece of food will take from a plate to a mouth via a hand is as good a time as any to stake your claim to it.
- When it comes to selecting an appropriate beverage, location and packaging mean nothing. There are absolutely no exceptions to this rule.
- If you really see something you want, and all your other attempts at getting it have failed, it is only right to grovel shamelessly. As a second tactic, stare intently at the object of your desire, allowing long gelatinous drools to leak like icicles from your lower lip.
- There are really only two important facial expressions to bother with: complete and overwhelming joy and nothing at all.
- Any time that is not meal time is potentially nap time. The best time to take a nap is when you hear your name being called repeatedly. The best location for a nap is dead center of any street or driveway. The most relaxing position is on your side, all four limbs parallel.
- The most practical way to get dry is to shake violently near a fully clothed person. A second effective method is to stand on a light-colored piece of furniture.
- Personal Safety
- At the first hint of any irregular noise, run from room to room barking loudly. If someone actually comes into the house, rush over to them whether you know them or not. Then kiss them so violently that they lose their balance or have to force you away physically.
- The greatest unacknowledged threat to life as we have come to know it is possums. No matter what you must do, make sure there are none in your yard.
- Recreation and Leisure
- Ball: There are two equally amusing sets of rules you will want to know.
- The Common Form, in which you receive a thrown ball and return it.
- The Preferred Form, in which you receive a thrown ball and eat it.
- Car: As you know, any open car door is an invitation to get in. Once inside, your only goal is to try to get out.
- Ball: There are two equally amusing sets of rules you will want to know.
- Health: In the event of a trip to the doctor, always be on your guard. If you getting vaccinated, urinate on the physician.
55) Bloat. Bloat (Gastric dilation) is an issue with deep chested dogs. GSD's and WSS can get bloat and bloat can kill. To prevent bloat you can feed your dog two meals a day rather than one big meal. Don't exercise your dog one hour before or one hour after feeding.
For info on bloat go to: WebMD ASPCA

56)Bathtime. Dog's do not enjoy being bathed although they usually love to swim in a river or the sea. If your dog is being brushed regularly a bath every two or three times a year is all that it really needs. If you are Showing, the dog will need a bath before the Show but apart from that, brushing will get rid of excess hair and dried on dirt. Excess washing a dog removes the oil which keeps its coat waterproof.
57) Vaccinations. There are always debates as to whether or not adult dogs need to be vaccinated. The three main vaccines are against Parvo-virus, Hepatitis and Distemper. This is a C-3 vaccine. A C4 is a C3 plus Parainflunza virus. C-5 is a C-4 plus Bordetello bronchiseptica. Most vets recommend three C-3 injections for puppies-at 6-8 weeks, then 4 weeks after that, then a third one 4 weeks after that, and a yearly booster after that. There is no need for a healthy adult dog to get a yearly injection after its 12 month old booster-every 3 years is now considered sufficient.

61) Summertime Tips #2 Hot feet. When walking your dog in hot weather check to see if the road or pavement you are walking your dog on is hot to the touch. If it's too hot for you to walk barefoot on it will be uncomfortable for your dog and could blister its paws. Early mornings and after sunset when it becomes cooler underfoot is the best time for doggy walks. Remember on longer walks to take water with you, for you and for your dog.
62) Summertime Tips #3 Snakes
Spring and summer are snake times in Australia. Best not to let your dogs off leash in areas where you can't see where they are going. Avoid long grass and logs by the sides of rivers. Sand dunes can also harbour snakes. Best to keep your dog inside as much as possible in snake season.

63) How To Wash A Cat.
1. Put both lids of the toilet up and add 1/8 cup of pet shampoo to the water in the bowl.
2. Pick up the cat and soothe him while you carry him towards the bathroom.
3. In one smooth movement, put the cat in the toilet and close the lid. You may need to stand on the lid.
4. At this point the cat will self-agitate and make ample suds. Never mind the noises that come from the toilet – the cat is actually enjoying this!
5. Flush the toilet three or four times. This provides a “power-wash” and “rinse.”
6. Have someone open the front door of your home. Be sure that there are no people between the bathroom and the front door.
7. Stand well back, behind the toilet as far as you can, and quickly lift the lid.
8. The cat will rocket out of the toilet, streak through the bathroom, and run outside where he will dry himself off.
9. Both the toilet and the cat will be sparkling clean. The Dog
65) Report Animal Abuse. These pictures(above) will make you upset if you love dogs but they are put on to serve a purpose. There are evil people who own dogs and neighbours who don't report them. Please report ill- treated animals to the R.S.P.C.A, Animal Welfare, P.E.T.A, Animal Liberation, the Police or your Council. Don't let animals suffer. If you can adopt or foster a shelter animal and give it some love it is a worthwhile thing to do. if you have sold puppies please try and keep in touch with their owners to see if they are being treated well. Please sell puppies with a contract of care such as at wss.breedersclub. |
64)How many dogs does it take to change a light bulb?
Border Collie: The Border Collie realized the bulb wasn't the problem, and is in the basement re-setting the breaker. Dachshund: You know I can't reach that light! Rottweiler: Make me. Lab: Oh, me, me!!!! Pleeeeeeze let me change the light bulb! Can I? Can I? Huh? Huh? Huh? Can I? Malamute: Let the Border Collie do it. You can feed me while he's busy. Jack Russell Terrier: I'll just pop it in while I'm bouncing off the walls and furniture. Poodle: I'll just blow in the Border Collie's ear and he'll do it. By the time he finishes rewiring the house, my nails will be dry. Cocker Spaniel: Why change it? I can still pee on the carpet in the dark. Doberman Pinscher: While it's dark, I'm going to sleep on the couch. Boxer: Who cares? I can still play with my squeaky toys in the dark. Mastiff: Mastiffs are NOT afraid of the dark. Chihuahua:Yo quiero Taco Bulb. Pointer: I see it, there it is, there it is, right there. Greyhound: It isn't moving. Who cares? Australian Shepherd: First, I'll put all the light bulbs in a little circle… Old English Sheep Dog: Light bulb? I'm sorry, but I don't see a light bulb? Afghan Hound: I buried the other light bulbs in the garden to get light flowers. German Shepherd: Alright, everyone stop where you are! Who busted the light? I SAID, "STOP WHERE YOU ARE!!!" Hound Dog:ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzz |
66) White German Shepherds and Colour Prejudice.
We all know that our white German Shepherds are very special and unique. They have a softer temperament than the coloured German Shepherds. Back in 1997, when the first Club for White German Shepherds began in South Australia there was a lot of nonsense around about the whites. They were labelled as undesirable as they couldn't be shown. Breeders of German Shepherds who had a white pup turn up in a litter most often put them down. Uniformed people spread rumours about whites including saying that they were deaf. They are not deaf but may have 'selective hearing.' In America where the breed was made popular they are classed as a rare breed and can be shown as a 'White Shepherd'
The first German Shepherd in Australasia to get a Flyball title (FD) was a white German Shepherd called Edelweiss Blizzard (Saxon) at the Royal Adelaide Show in 2000.

67) Paralysis Tick.
The Paralysis Tick is to be found from spring to late autumn in the eastern seaboard of Australia from Queensland to Victoria. (All year round in Qld). If not detected early enough the dog that has a tick may die. Dogs need to be protected by a flea and tick guard such as Frontline Plus or Advantage. A special tool can be used to remove a live tick without leaving its head behind. Symptoms of tick bite include salivating, difficulty breathing, regurgitation of food or drink and paralysis of the hind legs or all four legs. Checks need to be done every day if you live in a tick prone area.

68)Microchipping.
If your dog does run away when scared by thunder or someone leaves the gate open, you need to know that your dog will be identified by its microchip. All puppies and dogs need to be microchipped and in most States it is compulsory. it is not expensive and does not hurt the dog. Microchipped dogs can be registered at AAR, National Pet Register etc. |

70) Fleas. Fleas are hard to remove from a long-coated dog using a flea comb so here's a tip. Use a lip balm to catch the flea and then kill it in a bucket of water laced with insecticide. If you kill a flea by squashing it make sure to wash your hands afterwards as fleas carry bacteria. Frontline Plus once a month should keep fleas at bay.
71) Canine Life Rules
If dogs could teach us we would learn things such as: 1) When loved ones come home, always run to greet them 2) Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride 3)Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy 4)When it's in your best interest - practise obedience 5)Let others know when they have invaded your territory 6)Take naps and stretch before rising 7)Run, romp and play daily 8)Thrive on attention and let people touch you 9)Avoid biting when a simple growl will do 10)On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass 11)On hot days drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree 12)When you are happy dance and wag your entire body 13)No matter how often you are scolded, don't buy into the guilt thing and pout..run right back and make friends 14)Delight in the simple joy of a long walk 15)Eat with gusto and enthusiasm. Stop when you have had enough 16)Be loyal 17)Never pretend to be something you are not 18)If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it 19)When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle them gently. 73) Summertime Tip #4 Zinc. On hot sunny days if your white dog has to be outside, cover the pink areas of exposed skin -inside the ears, nose, and belly (if the dog likes to sunbathe on its back) with zinc. Even coloured dogs can get skin cancer from being left outside in the sun so it is always best to leave your dogs inside if you don't have a shade-cloth or leafy tree- covered run.

91) Choke Collars. Choke collars need to be put on correctly or they can harm your dog. Never leave a choke collar on your dog- they can snag on things and as the dog pulls to get free the choke collar will tighten and strangle your dog. For a puppy a soft material choke collar is better than a metal one which could damage their neck. Never yank a dog backwards on a choke collar as you can break its neck. Head Collars give better control than choke collars.
